My Hair Routine

I have been asked by several people to do a hair routine post. If you haven't notice I have very curly hair. I've always had it from the day I was born. I got it form my dad so of course my mom had no idea how to take care of it.  If you have even remotely curly hair you will know how hard it is to style and figure out. Well, after years of research and bad haircuts I finally figured it out. I would like to give a little thank you to my mother that really helped me get my hair how it is today and to my hair dresser who basically taught me everything there is to know about curly hair.

So first off we should start with a little background story. Like I said before I have had many bad hair cuts and I went threw half a decade with bad hair days....everyday. I would pull my hair back into a bun and leave it. If you know anything about curly hair you will know what I mean when I say I had a "halo" of frizz around my head when I did this.

Last year in June I got a hair cut from a new hair dresser. It completely changed my hair and what I do with it. My hair dresser introduced me to a whole new world for curly girls. She showed me how to take care of my hair and also some great products to use and a book to help you out. The whole method she uses is the "Deva Curl" you can learn more about it here.

Products

Now that I have given you some back ground let's start with products to use. As you can see from the picture above I have a ton of curly hair products. I can't count how many I have tried out. I can now say I have finally found what works for my hair and may work for yours. All these products you can find at your local Walmart or Target for a very reasonable price.

These are all of my favorites that really work for me. Every hair is different so you might have to play around a bit to find the perfect match. Also non of these gels will leave your hair crunchy which I know everyone hates. If you use a mousse it might leave your hair crunchy so I would stay away from that.

This is the Tresemme "Flawless Curls" gel. Its very inexpensive and really holds your curls all day. I have bought 2 bottles of this and as you can see need to get another.

The is the Garnier Fructis Style "Curl Scrunch" gel. I am currently using this and am very happy with it. I seem to have to use more of it then the Tresseme gel but it still works well. This is my first bottle but I will defiantly get it again.

This is the Loreal Ever Curl "Sculpt and Hold Cream" gel This reduces frizz very well but doesn't hold my curls like the other gels. I have bought 2 bottles of this and love it

This is the La Bella lots of Curls "frizz control" styling gel. I actually got this for a dance recital to hold my hair into a tight bun. But then I used in on my hair and it works amazingly! It has a tendency to get a little crunchy but if defiantly holds the best.

This is the Garnier Fructis Style "Curl Calm Down". This is basically a frizz control cream. This is not designed to hold curl just de-frizz it which, it does a great job of.

In the Shower

These are the products I use in the shower. Now, if you read the Deva Curl book the really emphasize that sulfates in your shampoo are very bad for your hair and will make it more frizzy. Now what are sulfates? Well, they are the stuff that makes your shampoo all sudsy. I have used sulfate free shampoo and it's true, it cuts down frizz. But what I have really notice is that it doesn't clean my hair as well. I have decided to just go with a shampoo that cleans my hair even if it gives me a little extra frizz. Now, for condition they really only say you want a really hydrating conditioner.

Right now I am using the Herbol Essences Totally Twisted shampoo and conditioner. Though the shampoo has sulfates in it. It doesn't seem to affect the frizz too much. I love the condition, I think it really hydrates my hair and leaves is shiny and smooth.

I also LOVE the Loreal  ever curl sulfate-free curl care system. It is amazing and so hydrating to the scalp and hair. I have bought this 3 times but when I ran out decided to try something new and went with the Herbal Essence one.

{Side note for the shower}. Never brush your hair. Not when its wet, dry or damp. That will really make your hair frizzy and it really straightens out your curls (making more frizz). The Deva Curl books tell you to just comb your hair out with your fingers. But if your hair is like mine and is really tangled then get a wide tooth comb and comb your hair while you have your conditioner in (because the conditioner makes your hair so smooth it  works as a detangler)

The Process

First you want to completely wet your hair. Now normally I would do this the shower but I wanted to show you guys what I do...so yeah.

Next I take about this much of my shampoo. Keep in mind how much hair I have.

Then I wash my hair like every other normal person.

Now, I take my conditioner. Yes this seems like a lot but I wanted to let you know this isn't even as much conditioner as I use. I used probably twice this much. This is the key to getting non frizzy hair.

Now like I said, I comb my hair out while I have my conditioner in. Try to only put your conditioner on the bottom half of your hair and keep it off you scalp to help prevent greasy hair.

Comb your hair out and add conditioner until your hair is very smooth, tangle free and yes slimy. After that you will want to rise your conditioner. ONLY RINSE VERY LITTLE

Now if I was taking a normal shower I would be standing right up. But for this step I would flip my hair over. What you want to do is section off your hair and twist those sections like this.

Your hair should look something like his when you are done twisting all your curls. Your hair should be tangle free and very wet and feel very slimy.

This next step is optional but will speed up the drying process. After you have twisted your curls simply scrunch out some of the water. But do this very carefully so your don't ruin the curls.

Next I take my gel. Yes, around this much. Sometimes more...

Next I evenly distribute the gel all over both my hands.

Next, I run my hands over my hair to apply the gel. This will decrease frizz. A good amount of gel will determine if your curls will be frizzy.

Next I will take individual curls and twist them around my hands. At this point is still have some of the gel left on my fingers.

 {I have two ways to dry my hair.}
The first is scrunch my hair with a tee-shirt. I'll scrunch it about 3 times and it will get a lot of the water out.

If I don't crunch my hair then I will do the "plop" as my hair stylist calls it. Basically I lay a tee shirt over my arms with my hair in it.

Then I basically gather all the hair in the back holding it with my hand.

This is what it will look like.

before I bring my head up i will lay a towel over my head just like you normally put a towel on. then I gather it the towel at the crown of my head and twist it. Basically you are putting a towel on normally but you have you hair all in a t-shirt. The towel is to hold it in place and add more insulation. I leave the plop in for about 15 minutes then I take it out. Basically when you take it out flip your head over and let your towel and t-shirt just fall off.

This is what my curls look like when I take out the plop. So after you take out the plop because you are still upside down. Rotate your head to one side till your head is all the way up and normal and your hair is hanging naturally.

To get some volume on your roots you can take clips or bobby pins and lift your roots a little then pin them in place. Now just let your hair completely hair dry then take out the clips.
